SAPU GIVES MESSAGE OF SUPPORT AT THE ANTI-CORRUPTION INITIATIVE BY BMA AT
OSHOEK BORDER POST

The South African Policing Union (SAPU) attends the anti-corruption initiative initiated by the
Border Management Authority(BMA) held today the 10th June 2026 at Oshoek Port of Entry and
gave a message of support. We stand proud to be part of this important initiative since we have
supported this campaign since its launch at GCIS Tshedimosetso House in Pretoria, where this critical
anti-corruption programme was first introduced and we are glad to see the show going on efforts of
being pro-active when coming to corruption, instead of being reactive .Our continued support is driven
by our understanding of the devastating impact corruption has on Law Enforcement institutions, if it is
not addressed proactively and decisively.
SAPU During the 2022 National Congress held in Polokwane, SAPU adopted a resolution under the
theme: “Revolution Against Corruption, Drugs and Gender-Based Violence Starts with Us, the
Working Class. “The resolution provides clear direction in the fight against corruption. It reminds us
that workers must never find themselves being perpetrators of corruption; instead, we must be
champions in the fight against it.
We have identified a challenge that continues to contribute to corrupt activities. When allegations of
corruption arise against members of BMA or other law enforcement agencies, action is often taken only
against the official who is alleged to have accepted a bribe or having participated in corrupt activities,
and very little attention is given to the perpetrators who offered the bribe in the first place. For this
reason, SAPU has consistently called upon lawmakers and has made submissions in Parliament
advocating for amendments to the Criminal Procedure Act to ensure that both the corruptor and the
corrupted are prosecuted. We believe that holding both parties accountable will serve as a strong
deterrent to those who seek to compromise our border guards and law enforcement officials. We are
also making a call to society at large that they must refrain from offering gratifications to lawenforcement
Officers, as our Law Enforcement Officers do not conduct corruption amongst themselves,
but there is always a third party involved.
SAPU would also like to commend the excellent work being done by BMA members and other Law-
Enforcement officers across the country's borders. We continue to witness significant operational
successes that demonstrate their commitment to protecting South Africa. One such success was the
recent drug bust at the Beitbridge Border Post, where approximately 713 kilograms of a chemical used
in the manufacture of Mandrax, with an estimated street value of R1 billion, was seized. Such
operations are a clear demonstration of the dedication and vigilance of our law enforcement personnel.
We salute the members involved in this operation and all law enforcement officers who continue to
resist the temptation of bribery and remain committed to doing what is right. As a trade union
representing members in the law enforcement sector, we take pride in these achievements because we
understand the positive impact they have on society. Every successful interception of drugs and other
illicit goods helps protect our communities from crime, addiction and social harm.
We further call for strengthened cooperation and collaboration among all law enforcement agencies
operating at our borders mostly between SAPS, SARS, BMA, SANDF and others as the principle of
collaboration was re-aerated by the Acting Head of SIU Leonard Lekgetho. Through collaboration,
information sharing and coordinated action, we can collectively combat corruption and other forms of
organised crime more effectively.
